Apple will add Scribble support for Korean in iPadOS 15.4 and I can’t wait!

I wrote this article a little too late… but it’s better than never! Besides, Apple has not yet released the GM of the software update.

Scribble being announced at Apple’s 2020 WWDC — Apple

Apple had introduced ‘Scribbles’ in iPadOS 14, a feature that converts text written with a Bluetooth-powered stylus into typed text. Scribble also allows you to erase, select, join in and insert texts.

With iPadOS 15, Apple added Scribble support for Japanese and other European languages like French, German and Italian. I found it really nice when Japanese support was added. So I just wondered, ‘When will Apple add support for Korean?’. I don’t use the feature that much, but it’s convenient if Scribble supports all the languages I speak (English, Filipino, Japanese and Korean).

Being part of Apple’s Beta Software Programme, I was given early access to developer beta software. And the moment a push notification from settings came from my iPad that iPadOS 15.4 beta was ready to install, I did not hesitate to do so.

Apple adds Scribble support for Korean as English and Japanese is also supported on my iPad Air 4 running iPadOS 15.4.

Using the (buggy) beta software for a while, I didn’t immediately realise that Apple added Scribble support for Korean. I only noticed it when I saw Korean in Scribble at the Apple Pencil menu in the Settings app. I was surprised because I didn’t expect it to be released early. I thought I had to wait for the release of iPadOS 16 before Korean support was added.

So, I tried opening the Spotlight menu and wrote something in Korean. In this case, the title ‘지금 우리 학교는 (All Of Us Are Dead)’, a Korean apocalypse series on Netflix.

Despite being a beta release, Scribble seems to work well with Korean. It was very accurate with converting handwritten hangul (Native Korean alphabet) into typed text. It was actually better than expected, in my opinion.

‘Peek performance’, the slogan of Apple’s March 2022 event.

Apple is expected to release the final GM of iPadOS 15.4 alongside iOS 15.4 and macOS Monterey 12.3 on their March 2022 Event this March 8 at 10am Cupertino time. That is at March 9, 2022, 2 am (Seoul time).
