On February 22, 2022, South Korea’s public broadcaster KBS had announced that they are holding a contest for writing the next K-drama to be produced on their affiliated Instagram account, KBS Drama.

Written in KBS’ announcement, translated in English:

In order to discover writers who will lead Korean dramas and secure completed plays to improve the quality of [our] dramas, we will hold a mini-series script contest as follows.

The ‘2022 KBS Drama Screenplay Contest’ that KBS will hold aims to find the next Korean drama they will produce. The chosen winner will get up to 30,000 US dollars in rewards and will benefit getting their written mini-series produced and participate in its planning and development.

According to the screenplay outline prescribed by KBS, the drama that the author should submit should be enough for 16 or more episodes. The presentation of the work should consist of the synopsis and the actual script. There is no restrictions on qualification — regardless if beginner or experienced in writing.

General guidelines in the script. All guidelines are written in Korean.

The submitted works should follow the following formats; the file type shall be .hwp and not PDF or other read-only file types. Thus, the name format should be ‘“Drama title”.hwp’. Do not include personal information such as phone numbers or email addresses in the submission.

KBS advises that all submitted works must be original and copyright-free. Adaptations from other books, screenplays and webtoons are not allowed. Violations of these rules can result in the cancellation of the chances of winning, and the author is responsible for all legal issues related to copyright infringement.

Submissions are not currently opened yet as they will start on April 18, 2022, at 10 am and closes on April 22, 2022, at 5 pm. Submissions are expected to happen on this website. The portal is accessible via Google Chrome and Firefox. As per the current information provided, KBS only accepts applications from Korea. Winners are to be announced in July of the same year.
